Screened in Porches

Screened in porches have always been my favorite room of the house. Every house we have owned has always had a screened in porch.

This outdoor living room keeps you shaded on hot, sunny days and dry on rainy days.

Screen Porch Windows

Screen porch windows need to be replaced or repaired periodically.

Since there were lots of tears and bulges in our screens, we decided to replace all of them this summer.

The two materials that can be used are aluminum and fiberglass porch screens.

Find out the advantages and disadvantages of each of these materials and what color provides the best view or visibility.

Porch Ceilings

Consider using bead board for your porch ceilings.

This fall we replaced our porch ceiling with bead board and it dramatically changed the look of the room.

It looks more updated and finished.

Porch Floors

Our porch floors have always been made of treated wood and then painted with an exterior paint. We just painted the floors last fall with Benjamin Moore's Exterior Low Lustre Acrylic House paint.

I'll let you know how well it holds up.

You may want to consider using an outdoor rug on your screened in porch. Although, they are not the most practical, we have bought a sisal rug for around our seating area. They are not easy to clean and do not like water. However, it provided the look I wanted.

We usually have to paint the floor every 2-3 years. Ours is used almost everyday in the summer.

We have just put up new bead board on the porch ceiling. First we needed to prime it with an all-purpose primer. The primer we are using is Benjamin Moore's Fresh Start Interior/Exterior All Purpose Primer. We have used Kilz before but have not had good luck with it.

For the ceiling we are using Benjamin Moore's Exterior Paint Low Lustre - but now I wish I would have gotten a semi-gloss. Maybe next time around.

Be sure to choose an exterior paint.

Outdoor Porch Lighting

Outdoor porch lighting allows us to use our screened in porch day or night. We often entertain in the evening on the porch, so it is important that we have lights to keep us outside.

I keep a regular lamp on my porch. Our porch stays very dry even when it rains, but if your porch gets wet, you may want to consider getting an outdoor floor or table lamp.

We also have built in strings of light that go around the screened in area. It provides soft mood lighting.

Porch Ceiling Fan

A porch ceiling fan needs to be installed in every porch in the south. Our porch is used frequently for meals and entertaining. The outdoor ceiling fan provides a nice bit of breeze to keep us comfortable.

After putting up a new beadboard ceiling, a new fan had to go with the new ceiling.

The plain old white fan served us well for 15 years, but we love this new fan that adds a more decorative touch to the porch.

Wicker Porch Furniture

Wicker porch furniture provides a relaxed, summer look, yet it is a durable and easy to clean. We have had our wicker outdoor furniture for 15 years.

When we started to re-decorate our porch and went shopping for new outdoor furniture, we found that we liked what we had better than what we saw in the stores.

So with some spray paint and new outdoor furniture fabric for the cushions, the furniture has a new, updated look.
